Locations

All locations have been chosen by our planters who have also had to secure the rights to plant on those sites.

This is not always easy as most sites are controlled by the mataqali, or clans, of individual villages where community politics and internal feuds dominate daily life.

So far, all sites feature neighbouring mangrove forests.
This particularly helpful as those areas are quasi identical habitats, and thus an ideal source for propagules of the correct species of Red Mangroves and Black Mangroves which are the first species that get planted.

For reasons of practicality, we have started with sites that are relatively close to Beqa Adventure Divers’ home base in Pacific Harbour on the main Island of Viti Levu. As our partners become more active, the effort will shift to more remote locations and eventually, to neighbouring islands that already feature Mangals as part of their natural coastal vegetation.
